As auditions to find Little Red of the Riding Hood family got under way in Kilkenny last night, it’s safe to say that panto season in Kilkenny is well and truly warming up.

For the past 21 years the people of Kilkenny have seen Watergate productions light up the stage with their colourful pantomimes, immersing the audience in well known fairytales, iced with topical stories and musical numbers, covered with sprinkles of giggles on top.

Their 22nd pantomime production will prove to be no different. Little Red Riding Hood, written by the local pairing of Phillip Brennan and John Morton, will be bringing old style panto back to the Watergate Theatre. They’ve managed to take the classical tale and root it in a local setting, giving it a fresh twist and transforming it into razor sharp and hilarious script.

Bringing Little Red Riding Hood to life is another local and first-time panto director, Kevin Mooney. Though new to Watergate productions, he’s no stranger to the stage both on and off, having recently written and performed in the highly acclaimed Some Flood at this year’s Tiger Dublin fringe festival, with The Devious Theatre Company. Kevin Read takes on the role of musical director while Gemma Grant returns to work with Watergate Productions as choreographer.

Little Red Riding Hood will run from 10-17 January 2015 and So Kilkenny will be following the production through its development over the next few months.

Chorus Call

While auditions have already begun to seek out principal roles, there is an opportunity to get involved on stage as a member of this year’s panto chorus.
