There must be some serious smiles at Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny (along with their international partners) as the local studio has done the double and received an Academy Award nomination for Song Of The Sea. The film, which opened in the US on 19 December, has yet to reach Irish or UK shores for a cinema release but is a huge achievement for the studio, following on from their Oscar nomination for Secret Of Kells.

They’ll go head to head on 22 February with Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How To Train Your Dragon 2 and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. One of the biggest animated releases of 2014, The LEGO Movie, doesn’t feature.

It’s the second Oscar nomination (grand to be able to say that, isn’t it?) for Tomm Moore and the first for Paul Young.

We might get some idea of how Song Of The Year will fair out in February when the 42nd Annual Annie Awards take place in LA at the end of the month where its in the running for seven awards.
