There was a strong wind blowing through Foulkstown today but Division 1B league leaders Kilkenny held their own and broke down a determined New Ross side to advance to the quarter final stages of this year’s Provincial Towns Cup with a 32-6 points win.

New Ross opened the scoring first with a penalty inside the first few minutes, the Wexford men having the wind at their backs for the first half. The wind would cause difficulties for Rory McInerney as Kilkenny missed three kicks themselves in the first half but would go into the break 15-6.

Podge Mahon, Dearan McGrath and Andy Nyenhuis were amongst Kilkenny’s five try scorers, the latter crossing the line in the second half with the wind clearly causing New Ross the problems Kilkenny had suffered in the first half. The two penalties for New Ross in the first half would be their only scores of the game, Kilkenny finding form after the break to add two converted tries and a penalty of their own to wind the game out at 32-6.

With the quarter final draw made after today’s game, Kilkenny will face Skerries at home on 22 March at 3pm.
