The first round of the Provincial Towns Cup brought a local derby to Foulkstown with Kilkenny taking on Carlow at home earlier this afternoon.

Kilkenny started strong and picked up their first of six tries within a minute of the start, Andy Nyenhuis powering over the line in space to kick off a free scoring first half that saw a total of eight tries added to the scoreboard.

Kilkenny lead at the break 40-14 but much like their league encounter a few weeks ago, Carlow turned things up in the second half and Kilkenny began to falter, allowing Carlow back into the game with three unanswered tries to finish things out at 40-33.

Kilkenny progress to the next stage of the Cup along with neighbouring Tullow. The Foulkstown men will host New Ross at home on 22 February while Tullow, having beaten Cill Dara 11-9, will travel to CPL Park to take on Longford. Gorey, having fallen to Kilkenny last weekend, left it late to seal a single point win, 17-16, over a tough Mullingar side.
