As if you ever needed any more excuses to hit Kilkenny for the May Bank Holiday weekend, the Kilkenny Roots Festival has tonight picked up the IMRO Best Small Live Music Festival award for 2014 at the annual awards ceremony held in IMRO HQ, Dublin.
The festival beat off competition from Body & Soul, Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival, Cork Jazz Festival, The Baltimore Fiddle Fair, Electric Picnic Music & Arts Festival, Indiependence Music & Arts Festival, Spiegeltent Festival Wexford, Vantastival and Longitude to pick up the award.
The sweetener for Kilkenny was the Best Live Music Venue (Rest of Leinster) award going to Cleere’s, pipping cross-town neighbours Set Theatre to the top spot, also head of Katie Daly’s Cellar Bar (Wexford), Number 1 (Mullingar) and the Wexford Arts Centre (Wexford).
The awards should go a long way towards shining a new light on one of the county and country’s best-loved music venues while it might just lead to another rush on tickets for this year’s Roots festival with all ticketed gigs on sale as of last week.Cleere’s & Kilkenny Roots Festival Scoop IMRO Awards
